, the nra would be there every step of the way. every u.s. attorney. violent felon, violent criminal, take them off the street. look, if ever -- >> there's no new gun regulation you would support. >> this is what would work. if every -- >> i'm asking you a direct question. is there any new gun regulation you would be willing to support? >> i'm giving you the answer. >> you're saying we should prosecute more criminals. >> he did not go on to answer the question directly. we do know the answer, the national rifle association does not support any new gun regulations at all, period. end of story. or at least end of the nra's story, the real story of gun violence and some things you probably don't know about it is ahead. there's actually some good news here, or at least promising news, scouts honor. >>> there are 1,000 names for the -- before i choose a name, i >>> there are 1,000 names for the -- before i choose a name, i can't even tell you the thing i'm talking about, the fiscal stuff that's going to happen at the end of the year, and it will be bad. that's not a great name. congressional st

that conversation. this is a frank luntz poll, 74% of nra members support criminal background checks. because nra members like average americans realize that that has nothing to do with the right of a law-abiding citizen to responsibly own a gun. these are the terms on which we have to have this conversation. and we need to hold people like lindsey graham accountable for making statements like that, that automatically equate any sensible conversation in our country about gun laws with second amendment rights because that's not an accurate portrayal of the conversation. >> dan gross, president of the brady campaign to prevent gun violence, great to have you on. thank you, sir. >> thank you. >>> we go back to the fiscal cliff and the president's call for higher tax rates for the wealthy. republicans fighting those hikes, say that one of the victims would be america's small businesses. >> people need to call him and ask him the question are you also talking about the small business folks. >> if you look at what he's doing, as jon kyl mentioned, raising taxes on small businesses -- >> so we hear that

from texas and the washington post saying i worry the nra has become a captive of the republican party at a time that it needs democratic votes. in the long run it will be weakened. brian ballard in the "wall street journal", a top republican fundraiser in florida, said opposition to certain gun control measures will make our job a lot harder electing middle of the road republicans in the future. i think republicans have to be mindful that just because the nra says something, it doesn't mean it's going to be advantageous to you and sort of the demographic we're speaking to in specific here is mothers across america. women who are swing voters. what is the republican party doing if it wants to win those votes 2014, 2016 and beyond? >> i think it probably ends up doing sort of close to what the democratic party is going to do, which is if you look at the kinds of gun controls that people support, they're not really very effective at stopping these kinds of shootings, right? the assault weapons ban, we had columbine. we had michael corn he'll and a lot of school shootings after that ban b

democrats with ratings by the nra said for the first time they are open to new gun laws. warner tweeted this was a game changer, and mansion seemed to agree. >> this changed the dialogue, and it should move beyond dialogue. we need action. >> reporter: an area of possible agreement is senator diane feinstein reintroducing a ban on assault weapons, one specific carney says the president supports. the president and vice president met with cabinet secretaries this afternoon to begin the work of figuring out what specific legislation they may come up with to deal with the aftermath of this tragedy. lou? lou: thank you, ed henry, fox news chief white house correspondent. first guest tonight says gun laws are a critical part of the national discussion, but the country also needs, he says, to respond to the mental health issues when it comes to mass shootings as well as the corrosive influence of the digital world and a culture of violation. joining us, former homeland security secretary, form earn governor of pennsylvania, tom ridge, who also served on the review panel to study the virginia t

and balanced look at the gun control debate. >> reporter: the nra chief has taken a lot of heat for his first public comments since the school shooting, that happened yesterday afternoon and he placed blame on hollywood and violent videogame makers for exposing kids to too much bloodshed and making no mention of restricting sales on assault weapons or ammo. >> i call on congress today to act immediately to do what is necessary to put armed police officers in every, single school in this nation and to do it now, to make sure that blanket safety is in place, when our kids return to school in january. >> reporter: a "gallup poll" found 53% agreed with increasing police presence at schools and said it would be effective and a third said what the effective and 12%, not effective and asked if banning the sale of salt or semi assault or semi-automatic weapons, 42%, yes. and, 36%, not effective. and most democrats came out in support of tighter restrictions on the sale of assault weapons and high capacity magazines after sandy hook and in lanza used an ar 15 and hundreds of rounds of ammo in the kill

guns. the nra should stop, they won't. we should stop them from being enablers of mass murder. >> being the national rifle association. congressman, thanks very much for your perspective. >> thank you. >> jerriey edjerry. >>> former chief economist at the u.s. sentencing commission and author of the third edition of the book "more guns, less crimes." thank you very much for coming in. i'll give you a chance to respond. the united states has a lot more murders, you just heard from congressman nadler. he said it's because there are so many guns that are so easiil available out there. >> well, you look at the murder rates in the other countries whether if be germany he just mentioned or others and they had lower murder rates relative to the united states before they had the gun control laws. when britain, other countries, ireland, jamaica, other places imposed gun bans, murder rates went up. americans have seen that in places like chicago and washington, d.c. every place in the world that we have crime data both before and after a gun ban has gone into effect, every single place has seen a

it done? >> well, they probably don't have the votes today. it will be interesting to see what the nra who is going to be making press announcements tomorrow start to say and whether they start letting some members off the hook on assault weapons bans. i don't know if they will, but i can tell you this. the nra has four million members. you know, the campaigns like mayors against illegal guns and others, within a few weeks they are going to have four million members. this is just not going to be tolerated in the same way anymore. and senators like scott brown may end up being kind of the first test on this. he made that crafty statement because he opposed a federal bill in the past. >> you mean the state should have the responsibility. >> right. but he knew as a senator that it was never going to pass. he was the number one recipient of nra money in his campaign over this last year. a lot of senators are going to find themselves in the cross hairs because of taking all of that money and when he comes back to -- tries to come back to the senate, that may very well be a big issue. >> like jo

of this program. a week after the massacre at sandy hook elementary, nra executive wayne lapierre joined the debate and here is part of what he said. >> the only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun. >> chris: senator barasso, wayne lapierre proposed having an armed guard in every school in america. estimates are that would cost some where not the neighborhood of $8 billion a year. a couple of questions. one, would you vote at a time of deficit issues for $8 billion a year to put armed guards in every school in america? and are there any laws you can support in terms of assault guns, or assault rifles in terms of high capacity magazines, tightening background checks, any new gun controls you could support? >> letts step back for a second. i'm a doctor and father of three and from wyoming, a state where we believe strongly in our second amendment rights. we are the people of wyoming and we personally still absolutely committed to find real solutions that work. so something like this tragedy never happens again. three more of those children were laid to rest yeste

are going to continue to the enablers of violence, namely the nra, which simply represents the gun manufacturers, which are really the merchants of death, to use a phrase from an earlier era. >> congressman jerry nadler of new york, thank you so much for being on the program. we appreciate it. >> thank you. >>> now to what congress will do the rest of this week, including the cliff negotiations. i'm joined by jonathan weissman of the new york times, great reporter, my colleague on the hill, thank you so much for being here. back to the cliff and guns on nadler, sherman was here saying there is some talk amongst leadership, but i keep beating this like a drum, doesn't seem to be any urgency on capitol hill. >> i was talking to some senators this morning, when are you going to get back into town? oh, you know, maybe tomorrow night we'll kind of come in. president obama will be coming in tomorrow night. doesn't seem the level of urgency that you would think, given that in five, six days these things are going to hit. and i think it's because they really -- i think there's a sense now

america, full disclosure. i am a handgun bonee owner and member of the nra. i'll do my best to stay in the middle on this one. alan, what did you think about what costas had to say there. >> you're not packing on the set there. >> no, jenna gets angry with me what i do that. the city of new york wouldn't allow it. >> he was quoting somebody else, obviously, i don't get the sense that he was calling for specific legislation, or saying here is what we should do. he wasn't specifically calling for gun control. he was saying some things that are true, we have a gun culture, and two, we could debate whether or not if jovan had a gun would he and his girlfriend be ali today? i think had he said there is a better chance that he would be -- or better than even chance he'd be alive today if they don't have a gun that might have been a better way to express it. he wasn't calling for specific legislation. i think it's interesting how conservatives have decided to jump on him immediately after that statement, which he had to address it and say something. jon: what i find interesting, jim is tha

that will strike fear in the hearts of folks at the nra because they, when he was senator biden, gave him an "f" on his pro-gun rights policies and said in 2008, few in the senate have as much experience as biden in attacking our right to keep and bear arms. they will not like the choice. but it does appear they are now going to take a serious look at, what, another assault weapons ban? what do you think is likely to come out of this? >> what was interesting in the president's press conference he was actually fairly specific what he hopes to get out of this task force. he says, it was clear it wasn't a commission. i think people who are speculating the president is using this biden task force to sort of get out of having to do implement serious gun control measures or doing kinds of things the president suggested he would do in his speech in newtown on sunday night are just wrong. i think the president is still eager to move urgently and i think the picking of vice president biden suggests that but he was fairly specific. he talked about reinstating an assault weapons ban. the president talked
